How Auto Insurance is Connected to Your Vehicle

Family in CarYour insurance is not connected to you as an individual; rather, it is connected to your vehicle. Before you let another driver get behind the wheel of your vehicle, make sure you understand how your coverage works.

Your Auto Insurance is Linked to Your Vehicle

Even though your auto insurance rate takes into consideration a lot of personal factors, such as your driving record and auto claims history, your insurance is actually linked to your specific vehicle.

If you were to purchase a new vehicle and sell your old vehicle, your insurance would not automatically jump to your new vehicle. You would need to call and update your policy, because your insurance is not just linked to you, but rather to your specific vehicle.

Your Auto Insurance May Cover Your Family

If you allow a family member (who lives in the same household as you) to occasionally drive your vehicle, they will often be covered under your insurance when they drive your vehicle. That means all aspects of your coverage still apply when they are driving. Occasionally, in the eyes of an insurance company, means about once a month or so.

If you have a family member (who lives in the same household as you) and needs to drive your vehicle on a regular basis, you need to add them to your insurance policy. A regular basis means more than once a month. Your insurance company can deny you coverage if they discover that your family member drove the car on a regular basis and you did not add them to your insurance policy.

Your Auto Insurance May Cover Your Friends

If you let a friend drive your vehicle, once again, the coverage follows your vehicle. As long as a friend only drives it on an occasional basis, your insurance may cover anything that happens while they are driving your vehicle.

It is important to remember that your insurance is linked to both you and your vehicle. If your vehicle changes, your insurance provider needs to know right away. You can let family and friends occasionally drive your vehicle, and your insurance coverage will still apply. However, if you let someone drive your vehicle on a regular basis, you need to add them to your insurance policy.
